PhpMySQLAutoBackup by Dave Walker, http://www.DWalker.co.uk is a no-go!

While watching Tiger make a comeback to champion status, PhpMySQLAutoBackup by Dave Walker ( http://www.DWalker.co.uk ) a no-go for me.  The setup is straight-forward, but when I run the script, nothing happens, even after I set the error_reporting to E_All!

So, I move on to another open-source script.  So it goes!

My hosting site for many domains registered to me for play and a little pay...

I went to Dreamhost ( http://tinyurl.com/dxk9sg ) for 98% of my hosting and email needs after I shutdown my home network (web, email, streaming, newsgroup servers and misc. sandbox stuff) connected to Megapath via a T1 through Covad over AT&T infrastructure back in 2003.  Oooh, that bedroom was toasty!

Web2.0: David Allen talks about ways you can make Facebook and Twitter work for you on the job

Time Management in the Age of Social Media
David Allen talks about ways you can make Facebook and Twitter work for you on the job

By David Allen

These days I'm asked frequently about the role of social media in personal and organizational productivity. The question is timely, as the major social media applications have millions of users and are still growing fast. Also, the phenomenon is closely tied to e-mail, which itself has presented major challenges to professionals in time management and keeping an appropriate focus in their work and life.

Twitter.com support...weeks instead of hours.

This is the status of my ticket with Twitter.com...

Eight days BEFORE assigning the ticket to an customer support analyst/agent is ludicrous.  Imagine if they had the agents answering phones and the automatic call distribution (ACD) system kept looping with "Awaiting the next available agent.  Your wait time is...8 days!"

"Ideas Worth Spreading...TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)" definitely worth spreading!

(I only found this because I own an iPhone and saw it in the App Store.  I try to listen to at least one talk on my into work. - Robert)

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week.

Thinking thru code to email user checking if they are still there to tell others their email is still valid on my site

A monthly cron job to email site’s users to click a link to verify they are still using the email listed in their account. Assumption that if user logs into site, their info is up to date, too.

Every 30 days, check if user has not verified in last 30 days

  • or, has not logged into site in last 30 days
  • If not, send email with link
  • update tracking table with internal_table_id, date, time, user_id, event_code (for ‘validating attempt’)

When user clicks on embedded link in email,
  • script parses URL
  • update tracking table with internal_table_id, date, time, user_id, event_code (for ‘verfied’)

I’ll use the tracking info to put an icon, next to their name in the list of users, to show if the info is current.

BTW, writing this out helps in seeing the event, and I can’t always find that scrap of paper I first started to write this all out!
